‘Tis the season to give thanks for what we have, and be of service to those who are in need. Although April is National Volunteer Month, volunteers are always in demand. Here are some local charities who support our communities, and some that do good works all over the world.
CHICAGO CARES
We care to make a difference, differently. Chicago Cares is the city’s leading connector of people, communities and causes through volunteerism. Since 1991, we have activated 500,000 people in service to address critical issues – from education to health and wellness to job readiness – in every corner of the city.
CHICAGO COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS
Chicago Coalition for the Homeless (CCH) organizes and advocates to prevent and end homelessness based on our belief that housing is a human right in a just society.
ONE GOOD DEED – Cities of Service®
A bipartisan coalition of more than 100 mayors from across the nation who have committed to work together to engage citizens to address critical city needs through impact volunteerism. The coalition aims to create a vibrant and growing network of municipal governments effectively leveraging citizen service as a reliable, viable tool to achieve measurable impact on pressing local challenges. By accelerating the service movement at the most local level—connecting local needs to the supply of willing volunteers in innovative and impactful new ways—Cities of Service aspires to create a new chapter in America’s longstanding history of service while making local government more effective.
GREATER CHICAGO FOOD DEPOSITORY
All you need to do is sign up in advance. Join volunteers like you that offered more than 98,000 hours of help last year, making it possible for us to distribute 66 million pounds of food.
DEBORAH’S PLACE
Deborah’s Place breaks the cycle of homelessness for women in Chicago. Through a continuum of housing options, comprehensive support services and opportunities for change provided by dedicated volunteers and staff, women succeed in achieving their goals of stable housing, sustainable income and greater self-determination.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY – Downtown Chicago
Part of the mission of Windy City Habitat for Humanity is community building. To that end, we welcome all members of the Chicago community to support our mission through advocacy, volunteering, and financial support. The driving force behind our organization is our volunteers, who contribute their time, talent and resources. Volunteers work side by side with future Habitat partner homeowners to help them realize and fulfill their dream of home ownership.
