Just west of the Kennedy Expressway and Lincoln Park’s DePaul University are Near West and Wicker Park. These deep-rooted urban communities have undergone many transformations since the late 19th Century, emerging into one of the most vital and lively neighborhoods in Chicago today.

Eclectic Appreciation

Housing choices in Wicker Park / Near West reflect the neighborhood’s diverse provenance. Originally settled by residents mainly of German and Scandinavian descent, a large migration of Polish immigrants later gave the area the nickname of “The Polish Gold Coast.” Low rents drew the artistic community that flavors the area today. This combination of Old World and avant-garde is seen in the large Victorian-style homes surrounding Wicker Park, the magnificent residencs of “Beer Baron Row,” brick cottages and two-flats, intimate condominium buildings, and new town home developments.

Some of the city’s hottest restaurants, shops and galleries, intimate coffee houses, and cutting-edge clubs appeal to a new generation of city dwellers. There’s always something happening in this urban playground. Its annual art and music weekend is one of the best in the city.
